Capturing the flavour of Renaissance-style bound books, our Ochre cover pays homage to the craft of delicate gold tooling. For this Old Leather design, we have incorporated a gold-on-gold design, inspired by the background colour of our Rembrandt’s 350th Anniversary journal.
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language. His best-known novel, Don Quixote, is a classic of Western literature. We are honoured to be able to share a handwritten letter he wrote to the Spanish king requesting permission to publish his great work as this cover design.
H.G. Wells was a science fiction pioneer whose visions for our future have greatly impacted our modern world. His first novel, The Time Machine (1895), was an instant success, as were those that followed. As a celebration of Wells’ life and legacy, we are honoured to reproduce his handwritten The Time Machine manuscript.
Virginia Woolf carved out new territory for artists, particularly women writers. She wrote with sensitivity and insight about the confusion, mystery and uncertainty of everyday life. Her 1931 novel The Waves was originally drafted in a series of seven notebooks, including the one reproduced for this cover.
Laurel Burch was a self-taught artist and “flower child” who created vibrant and moving themes with paint and paper. This Hummingbirds & Flutterbyes cover design, featuring dancing butterflies and flitting hummingbirds, comes from one of Laurel’s favourite themes to paint – Flutterbyes.
We have gone back to our publishing roots with our collection of Old Leather Classics, celebrating what it is about Renaissance-style gold tooled bindings that we have always found so captivating: the rich hues of the dyed leather. The timeless beauty of an antique leather binding is brought into the present on the cover of this deep blue book.
Laurel Burch was an artist who created brilliantly coloured, vibrant and moving themes with paint and paper, themes which inspired this book cover. For this Jungle Song design, Laurel Burch’s original characters, foliage and other details were adapted by a Japanese artisan to create a new watercolour painting.
Discover the legends of the constellations! This design highlights the craftsmanship involved in creating illuminated books such as De sideribus tractatus, a 15th-century manuscript copy of De astronomia. Though the 1st-century BC original is long lost, it has been kept alive by the scribes and miniaturists who reproduced it.
Jack Kerouac stands out as the voice of the Beat Generation. His 1957 novel On the Road, setting his real-life travels against a backdrop of jazz and poetry, was formed in a series of notebooks he kept. Our Jack Kerouac cover features one of his diary entries alongside an illustration by Dominic Ferrari.
